Mansion Sports – The Madrid derby was intense and full of controversy. Atletico Madrid defeated their city rivals, Real Madrid, 2-1 at the Metropolitano, but the victory was overshadowed by several refereeing decisions that sparked anger from the Real Madrid camp.

Amid the heated situation following the match, Diego Simeone delivered a firm response to Jose Mourinho.

The Atletico Madrid manager stressed that respect for match officials must always be maintained, regardless of how great a manager’s reputation may be.

Simeone Demands Respect for Match Officials

Tension between the two benches reached its peak after the final whistle at the Metropolitano, with Mourinho delivering lengthy criticism of the refereeing standards.

However, Simeone quickly defended the integrity of the match and suggested that his fellow manager had crossed the line.

The Argentine manager stressed that being a well-known figure in world football does not give anyone the right to belittle referees who are handling matches under immense pressure. Simeone made his position clear by saying, “We respect the opinions of other managers.”

The Atletico manager then emphasised the importance of maintaining professional standards, even when emotions are running high in a derby.

In a statement directed at the media, he explained that there are boundaries that must not be crossed by people in leadership positions.

“But what I understand from our position is that respect for the referee, even if we benefited from some decisions today, must be maintained, because otherwise everything becomes permissible. Not everything is permissible, even if your name is Mourinho,” Simeone added.

Mourinho Furious Over Refereeing Decisions

Mourinho’s frustration was clearly visible throughout his media appearance after the match.

He reportedly arrived with visual evidence to support his complaints. The Real Madrid manager was particularly angered by Cuti Romero’s tackle on Jude Bellingham that did not result in a red card, as well as the red card later shown to his own defender, Dean Huijsen.

During an emotional monologue lasting several minutes, Mourinho showed match images to explain his perspective to the journalists in attendance.

He argued that the match would have looked very different if the officials had acted fairly from the beginning.

“We can get through this press conference because the story of the match is here,” Mourinho said while showing the images, in what became the beginning of an emotional outburst that lasted almost five minutes.

“Those are two clear red cards. The difficulty we faced after the red card. 11 against 10.”

Tactical Dominance and Match Analysis

Despite the controversy surrounding the refereeing, Simeone remained focused on the tactical execution that allowed Atletico to secure three important points.

Simeone praised his team’s discipline and their ability to remain composed during the period when they had a numerical advantage after Huijsen received a red card.

“An intense match, which we controlled throughout. We stopped an opponent who have incredible transitions, we controlled almost all of those transitions.”

The Argentine manager also dismissed the suggestion that his team had simply been fortunate because of the refereeing decisions.

Instead, he preferred to look at the overall balance of the match. In his view, his players deserved the victory because of their collective hard work and their ability to execute a well-prepared game plan.

Simeone said, “I usually do not give an opinion. He said Cuti’s tackle was not a red card, but if we want to focus on that and not on the match, that is fine, this is a game and let us all play.”

Atletico Move into the Upper Ranks of La Liga

The result moved Atletico Madrid into second place, overtaking Real Madrid in the standings.

Barcelona remain top of the table, but Simeone feels encouraged by the development of his squad, particularly the integration process involving new players such as Jonathan David and Julian Alvarez.

The manager stressed that his team is still in a “building phase” and will continue to develop as the season progresses. Regarding the victory, he remained modest.

“Clearly, being 1-0 up is not enough.”

When asked whether the better team had won the match that day, Simeone refused to make a sensational statement to the media and instead chose to keep his squad focused.

He remained wary of narratives coming from outside the club and wanted to ensure his players were not distracted by the impact of the derby.

“You are looking for a headline. I do not need that headline. Let us talk about the match we played, not the match they want us to play,” he concluded.
