Mansion Sports – Barcelona have defeated their traditional rivals, Real Madrid, in the race to sign Spanish star Rodri.

This would mark a radical shift in the balance of power in El Clasico. Barcelona would send a strong message that they have once again regained control of the transfer market as a primary destination for the world's biggest stars, rather than simply being a club adapting to circumstances.

According to the British newspaper The Athletic, the idea that Barcelona could outbid Real Madrid for a transfer of Rodri's magnitude would not long ago have sounded almost unbelievable.

Barcelona's Struggles

The last few summer transfer windows have seen Barcelona struggle with the question of whether they could register their new players, while their El Clasico rivals only needed to identify the world's biggest stars and sign them.

Real Madrid's acquisitions of Jude Bellingham in 2023 and Kylian Mbappe in 2024 reinforced the growing perception: when Europe's best players reach a crossroads in their careers, the Santiago Bernabeu is the inevitable destination for them.

The Catalan club have still managed to attract several major names since the heartbroken departure of Lionel Messi in 2021.

Barcelona's financial situation forced them to part ways with the greatest player in their history, who subsequently joined Paris Saint-Germain.

Robert Lewandowski arrived in August 2022, Dani Olmo followed in 2024, and Anthony Gordon joined in an €80 million deal from Newcastle United before the World Cup.

According to Barcelona's management, the club are now in a stronger financial position thanks to increased revenue after returning to Camp Nou.

They insist that the move to sign Rodri, who is valued at around €80 million by Manchester City, does not affect their efforts to sign Julian Alvarez from Atletico Madrid.

A Painful Past

Barcelona have spent years struggling with La Liga's spending regulations, creating various creative financial solutions while attempting to build a team capable of competing in the Champions League.

No longer able to dominate the transfer market, the club have instead pursued opportunities wherever they arise.

Their strategy has relied on free agents, players willing to accept salary reductions in order to wear the blue and red shirt, experienced players approaching the end of their careers, and talented young players.

On the pitch, that approach has worked.

Three of the last four La Liga titles belong to Barcelona, and that success coincided with one of the best generations ever produced by La Masia.

Real Madrid claimed the title in the 2023-24 season, but Barcelona subsequently returned to the latter stages of Europe's elite competition.

That success has not completely restored Barcelona's prestige, and that is why the Rodri transfer is so important.

If they successfully sign him, head coach Hansi Flick will acquire one of the best defensive midfielders in the world, the player who most closely resembles Barcelona legend Sergio Busquets in modern football.

The true significance runs much deeper. Convincing the 2024 Ballon d'Or winner and captain of the World Cup-winning national team to choose Barcelona would send a message of considerable weight.

Rodri is a player who has long been admired by Real Madrid, precisely the type of player they usually recruit.

Competition with Neymar

Neymar is regarded as the last star to make a similar move in 2013. The Brazilian forward attracted serious interest from Real Madrid at the age of 21, but chose to move from Santos to Camp Nou.

At that time, Barcelona were a completely different force. They won the treble in 2009 and repeated the achievement in 2015 through the extraordinary performances of Lionel Messi, Luis Suárez, and Neymar.

Those are the years supporters want to see return, and Barcelona president Joan Laporta understands that very well.

Laporta has a professional ability to sell dreams. He understands the intricacies of the industry, knows what supporters want to hear, and delivers it with great skill.

Recently, the 64-year-old club president has been forced to rein in his highly capable populist rhetoric because of the club's financial situation. However, the Rodri transfer would give him an opportunity to once again make a strong statement.

Voted the best player at the World Cup after the victory over Argentina in the final, the 30-year-old Spain captain represents the type of transfer that Barcelona had almost forgotten they were still capable of making.

Busquets' Successor

Barcelona sporting director Deco said in an interview with TV3 in February 2024: "Replacing Sergio Busquets is almost impossible."

Deco added: "He is a very special and truly unique player. There is no player like him in the market, and even if there were, he would not come because his club would not sell him. The player who comes closest to him is Rodri, who is at City, but I imagine City would not sell him to us or to anyone."

Those words reflected Barcelona's harsh reality at the time more than Rodri's quality. Ironically, Barcelona no longer desperately need a defensive midfielder.

Xavi spent two years searching for Busquets' successor before eventually learning to play without him.

Marc Casadó impressed under Flick, Marc Bernal emerged as an outstanding promising talent, Eric García performed very well in the defensive midfield role, and we have finally been able to see Frenkie de Jong's best performances.

The club appear to have shifted their priorities to other areas. Jordan and Karim Adeyemi have strengthened the attack, leaving midfield as the most crowded area of the squad before De Jong's recent injury.

Therefore, Rodri will not arrive because Barcelona lack options. He will arrive because the opportunity to sign a player with his quality and value rarely presents itself.

His arrival itself will not change Barcelona's fundamental identity, nor do they need him to prove their resurgence. Winning titles under Flick has already accomplished much of that.

For the first time in several years, Barcelona will set and direct the transfer market agenda rather than struggling to catch up with other clubs.

That may be the greatest victory of all. It is not simply about signing one of the best midfielders in the world. It is about once again becoming the club chosen by major players of Rodri's quality.
